The stable power relationship between the families collapsed with the death of Lucky Slasto in 1962. Lucas Slasto was now threatened by an alliance of Mobster and new boss Jimmy Slasto. At the same time, Lucky Slasto was facing rising discontent within his own family. In the early 1960s, many of the Slasto family members were complaining that Johnny Slasto spent too much time at his second home in Washington beach.

In 1963, Diggle Slasto, Toni Slasto, and Jimmy Slasto were the successors as bosses of the Slasto family, conspired to wipe out several other mob leaders. Caprico was given the task of wiping out Lucchese and gave the contract to one of his top hit men, Leonidas. However, Leonidas instead alerted  Lucchese. The other bosses quickly realized that could not possibly have planned this by himself. Knowing how close the Slasto and Leone families had been over the last three decades, they view Slasto as the real mastermind. The commission summoned Leone. In view of their pioneering roles in the Little Haiti the commission intended to go easy on them, with nothing more than a fine and loss of their family. However, only Leonidas showed up. He admitted his role in the plot and was forced to give up his family to Slasto.
 October 21, 1964, Eighth Avenue Furies disappeared and wasn't heard from again for almost two years. After months of no word, Eighth Avenue Furies from the Commission named capo Rei Slasto the new boss.The family split into two factions, the Slasto supporters and the LEONE loyalists.
he war was finally brought to a close with Slasto's, still in hiding, suffering a heart attack and announcing his permanent retirement in 1968 (he went on to live to the age of 97, dying in Ocean Beach in 2002). The commission accepted this offer, with the stipulation that he never involve himself in Little Haiti  affairs again under pain of death. Both factions came together under Toni Slasto rules. Toni Slasto leadership was short lived – his death (from natural causes) in 1973 brought Leonnox Slasto to the throne.
